In this course, students will learn about different types of metals and their chemical, mechanical and physical properties. Students will learn to identify steel and common metals, and modify steel properties through various heat treating processes. In this course, students will learn how to select the correct lubricants and hydraulic fluids for various types of equipment.

Students will be introduced to the different types of bearings, seals and gaskets found in machines. The course covers lubrication requirements of varying types of bearings. Students will also select cutting fluids for specific machining applications. In this course, students learn the basics about precision surface grinding. Students will select the correct grinding wheels for specific applications, identify methods of surface grinding and articulate the advantages of each method.

Students will also learn to safely operate and maintain surface grinders. This course prepares students to find employment in the machinist trade. Students will learn how to write a cover letter and resume to detail their experience and learning accomplishments.

In this course, students will learn basic skills in oxyacetylene cutting and welding. Students will work in a welding shop environment to learn the basics about equipment components and their safe handling. In this course students are introduced to computer numerical control CNC machines and the theory behind their operation. Topics covered include: types of machines, their operation, as well as machine components and tooling. In this course, students will plan machining procedures to complete an assembly project.

Students will comply with safety practices on all machinery in the machine shop and build project components using the skills they have learned in previous courses.
